SCWA Update Regarding MacArthur Aiport Water Concerns
February 01, 2018
The Suffolk County Water Authority has provided an update in response to questions from the Civic Association and other concerned residents asked about yesterday's Newsday report that NYSDEC designated MacArthur Airport as a possible Superfund site and the possible contamination of Bohemia's drinking water.
SCWA advises that the contaminant detected at the particular well field in Bohemia, known as Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, or PFOS, is removed from drinking water using Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) treatment. The Authority claims it has GAC treatment in place at the one well field at which there was one test result above the health advisory level for PFOS. Since this treatment was also in place at the time of the test, SCWA advises that our water is perfectly safe to drink.
The Water Authority will hold an informational meeting on Monday, February 5 at 6pm at the Connetquot Public Library to provide further information and answer residents' questions. All are welcome. Questions about your water quality can also be directed to SCWA Director of Communications Tim Motz at Tim.Motz@SCWA.com.
The Civic Association thanks Legislators Tom Cilmi, Bill Lindsay and Councilwoman Trish Bergin-Weichbrodt for responding to the Civic Association's questions about this issue.
